first steps here

As a part of my work duties I gather requirements and create use cases according to predefined template putting them ALL into one MS Word document (or several). Keep dreaming of some automation tool, which would store all that stuff. I'm sure professionals know a lot of tools and suggest...

a little detail

This is a great post and I’m hoping that some of the response could enlighten us as to the “why” around a tool rather then just a website link.  Please share personal experience, success and interesting stories s that we can relate that to our current projects. Thank you

We had a similar problem with a Word document and use cases in Excel. We have found Optimal Trace a good tool, especially as it draws out the flow for you as you describe the use case steps and alternate scenarios

Automation

We are going to use Rational reqisite pro to trace the various requirement types.. (i.e. features, use cases, design docs, test cases) Hopefully this will help manage the traceability and assist us in easily identifying if all requirements have test coverage and for scoping purposes if we can easily identify how a chage in a requirement affects the other's.

Will keep you posted once we start using it though..

Automation

You should look at inteGREAT Requirements Studio tool, full traceability from concept, through requirments, through use cases, and test cases, front to back. This includes reverse engineering missions. An exciting project was just piloted between  edev technologies and the Provincial government to ressurect a legacy application, back from the depths, back to the surface with all the trace-ability, attributes, business rules, test cases re-created! The traceablity is driven from changes and additions to the knowlege base, and attruibutes and reports are rendered from the knowldege base.

Creating, Storing and modifying use cases, etc

Blueprint (www.blueprintsys.com) has a wonderful tool called Blueprint Requirements Center. You can write textual requirements, build use cases, create use case scenarios and model them through a simulation. You can then use the use cases to build test scenarios. Additionally, documents can be stored on the server and be accessed through Blueprint Requirements Center. As good as Blueprint is, it's even better - others who are not Blueprint users can view and comment on your requirements through a tool called Blueprint Reader - it works very similar to Adobe's Acrobat. I am not employed by Blueprint but I do know some companies who are using it and have increased their productivity by using the software. It might be worth a look.

Interesting strategy from Blu

Interesting strategy from Blueprint......why not store and view attributes on a common server platform such as Microsoft Sharepoint? More open standards, much less cost to implement, less licenses etc....?

BA Tools Performance Update

To: paveyard: Sparx rheath: Compuware a_debona: Rational Requisite Pro mark winham: inteGREAT Requirements Studio lindafitzgerald: Blueprint I’m looking at BA Tools and would like to know how your tool performed – can you give us an update? Did the tool fit your needs? If not, why? Were there any “glitches” found? Were there any “work-a-rounds” used? If so, what were they? Was the tool quick and easy to use or was it labor intensive? Most importantly, what other tools have you used? Which tool do you like best? How does this tool rate? (Scale of 10 to 1: 10 = "Best-In-Class" and 1 = "Waste of Time & Money").
