CBAP CDU categories for re-certificaiton

Hi,

Now that IIBA has published the re-certification requirements I'm wondering how you feel about the caterogization of CDUs? Personally, I believe the early receiptents are generally more active in the community then subsequent receiptent may be. I wonder if some will struggle to earn the CDUs required given their life work/family balance needs.

I was surprised that chapter events were combined with other eduction in category 2. If the goal is to encourage more participation separating chapters would give more incentive to participate in a local chapter for some professionals

What do you think?

CBAP CDU categories for re-certification

I am more surprised, and pleased, at the inclusion of self-directed learning than I am at how chapter events are grouped. You make a good point, though, about encouraging participation in local chapter events.

If you look at the Activity Value as a priority ranking for what is expected of a CBAP, my thoughts would be that Professional Experience, Volunteer Service, and participating in chapter events should come first. Receiving or providing education is great, and it is important to stay current, but the top reason I can think of for placing formal education first is because it is one of the easiest things to do. I know I would pursue an MBA in Business Analysis given the time and money. But how much education is needed post-CBAP?

I am a little surprised that Professional Activities are worth more than Professional Experience. At the same time, I can see how a CBAP getting published would help to increase awareness of the CBAP certification and IIBA. I guess that what it comes down to is that while I may not agree with the values, I can imagine reasons for them being that way.

CBAP re-certification credits

I am disappointed with the published credit maximums for re-certification, specifically around the professional development category. This category contains a mixture of formal courses, attendance at chapter meetings, webinars, etc. The maximum is on the entire category vs. any of the sub-categories within it. This category has some excellent items in it that include informal learning, formal learning, networking, etc. It seems a shame that you can max out in this category fairly quickly.

This is unlike the PMP re-certfication which you can obtain using professional experience and professional development only. PMP only has maximums on self learning (reading articles, etc.), volunteer work and professional experience.

CBAP re-certification credits

I am disappointed with the maximums credits, specifically for the professional development category. This category contains a mixture of formal training, informal training, webinars, chapter meeting attendance, etc. You can top off at the maximum quite quickly even though you are furthering your knowledge in a variety of ways. Only a very small percentage of CBAPs are going to be involved in volunteer work, academic education and professional activities (such as author / speaker). This basically leaves professional experience, professional development and self directed learning as the 3 mandatory categories for the average CBAP.

In looking at the PMP re-certification, there are only maximums on volunteer work, self directed learning and work experience. I find that the maximums enforced for PMP are more fair and target the average professional more closely.
