My Meeting with Dr. Magdy Hanna of the IIST
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Magdy Hanna of the IIST (International Institute of Software Testing) and Rommana Software. Dr. Hanna was insightful and knowledgeable about many topics including Business Analysis. We discussed several topics including E2 Consulting’s new Comprehensive & Robust Requirements Specification Process (CRRSP) requirements methodology, project success rates and potential areas of improvement within the project life cycle.
During the meeting Dr. Hanna took the time to introduce me to Rommana’s new Life Cycle Management Software. I have to say, I was quite impressed! I have been looking for an integrated tool that included requirements management as an equal component for almost ten years.
As a result, I have reviewed numerous requirements tools and other tools that allow for the capture of requirements and business processes. Unfortunately many of the tools I have reviewed have fallen short.
They often simply include a requirements document repository (as in the case of the Mercury Test Suite), or they miss critical components to the rest of the project items under the purview of the BA (as in Compuware’s Optimal Trace). The biggest piece that I see is consistently missing is the ability to work with the requirements, trace them back to scope, through process mapping and then forward through development and then the testing cycle.
Still if you could hobble these systems together and add in Pega Systems BPM software, you’d have a workable model. The biggest concern would still be data flow between the systems and reliability of the data if you were to build an application bridge. It would definitely be considered unreliable if you performed manual data transfers between the systems and there would be a considerable risk of the loss of data integrity.
I believe the new LCMS package will not only deliver this, but will actually improve the management of application environments from a program management level. Rommana is the first life cycle management tool that I have been introduced to that actually offers a full suite of project functionality from project management and requirements, through to testing. Clearly, the advantage here is that traceability is inherent in the application without the risk of a loss of data integrity.
I strongly encourage you to check out the tool and accessing their free trial. I know you’ll be as impressed as I was!

IIST/Rommana -- Tool and Vendor Considerations
It is imperative to look beyond the features of the software and consider adherence to industry standards and especially the vendor backing the software. You will have to live with them for a long time. In the case of this company (IIST), they reneged on their promise of a full refund if I wasn't satisfied with their product, and left me over $2400 poorer.
So, as you create your evaluation framework, include a column to weight the quality and integrity of the supporting organization, and the risk you might be taking by choosing a small independent vs a known, reputable company. Don't simply rely on the company's own website or quotes they repeat from satisfied customers. (Everybody has at least some satisfied customers. And you can be sure the company's website won't quote the dissatisfied ones!) Perform due diligence independent of any self promotion.
Further, look at interoperability issues and standards support, such as DoDAF. Check with organizations such as INCOSE, AIAA, IEEE, AMA (not the doctors), and even QFDI. If these groups don't indicate a great track record for the tool you are considering, see what they are recommending.
Extra footwork up front will save you from a lot of headaches and heartbreak later.
