BI is about more than just data
One of the most important success factors, IMHO, for a BI project is to realize that it's about more than just data. I've seen too many BI projects run aground because they took a data-driven approach to their requirements strategy. They basically built the BI solution and nobody came, and nobody came because the BI team didn't really understand how the end users wanted to work with it.
My advice is to recognize that BI projects aren't special, that just like most other types of projects your best bet is to take a usage-driven approach to requirements where artifacts such as use cases, user stories, or usage scenarios are your "primary" requirements technique.
