Gap Assessment vs Gap Analysis
Ah! It's not that they're missing gap analysis, but gap assessment which is a full spectrum assessment (check out the Mechanics of Gap Assessment).
The truth is BA's take the shotgun approach to business analysis because there is a lack of formalization to the practice. Without knowing what the tools do in context of a project, they'll guess at what to apply and when.
That's exactly why I created a new methodology for requirements (CRRSP). There is a specific way to apply the tools to get the results you want or need. The methodology essentially puts them in context.
